What Is A Proper Diet For Glomerulonephritis Patients

Chronic glomerulonephritis also refers to chronic nephritis, which is characterized by proteinuria, blood urine, high blood pressure and edema. The illness conditions advance slowly and eventually develop to a type of kidney disease characterized by inflammation of the filtering mechanisms in your kidneys, called the glomeruli. Once the glomeruli is inflamed, they can not remove wastes and fluid from the body efficiently. To control the amount of waste in your body and alleviate your illness conditions, you should follow a proper diet plan so as to slow down the progression of chronic glomerulonephritis.

1. Low protein intake

Protein will be transformed into a waste product called urea. When kidneys are healthy, they can excrete the urea out of your body via urine. If you have glomerulonephritis, your kidneys cannot remove urea from the body properly, which will make your kidneys overworked and worsen your condition. In this case, if you still intake much protein, it will also cause urea accumulation in your body. What’s more, protein plays a variety of role in your body, such as muscle growth and tissue repair. Hence it is important for you to control protein intake strictly.

2. Reduce sodium intake

Sodium is used to regulate the amount of fluid in your body. If there is too much water in your body, it triggers your kidneys to retain water, which can lead to high blood pressure and increase blood volume. And high blood pressure also worsens your conditions. Patients with chronic glomerulonephritis have to follow a low sodium diet and avoid high sodium foods, such as canned foods, processed foods, pickles, bacon and processed meat.

3. Avoid high potassium foods

The unhealthy kidneys fail to keep potassium level in a normal level and easily trigger high potassium level in your body. High potassium levels can disturb proper muscle and nerve function, causing irregular heart beat and even heart attack. For this, you may be recommended to stay far away from high potassium foods such as bananas, sweet potatoes, oranges, spinach, nuts, dairy products, legumes and tomatoes.

4. Restrict fluid intake

In the later stages of glomerulonephritis, kidney almost loses its function and cause fluid build up in your body, causing edema. Too much fluid retention can aggravate your conditions. In severe case, pulmonary edema occurs which is likely to threaten your life.
